Vein Health Clinics to Continue Treating Dialysis Patients During COVID-19

Dialysis is a medical treatment for acute or chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients whose kidneys can no longer function normally — these vital excretory organs can no longer filter out waste on their own. Dialysis treatments essentially perform the function of removing waste from the body. which is why they are crucial to the health and survival of kidney patients.

However, before dialysis treatment can begin, vascular access must first be implanted in the patient. At Vein Health Clinics, vascular doctors use two types of internal vascular access: the arteriovenous (AV) fistula and the arteriovenous graft.

In the arteriovenous fistula procedure, a vein is connected to a larger artery, which then causes the vein to distend. The fistula or enlarged blood vessel makes it possible to start dialysis with a relatively low risk of infection. Additionally, the larger blood vessel has a lower risk of clotting. The arteriovenous fistula procedure is usually done on the lower or upper arm. It does not interfere with arm functionality, so it allows for the unrestricted use of the limb before and after dialysis.

On the other hand, the AV graft is for patients who have veins that are blocked, too small, or too weak to have an AV fistula type of vascular access.

In the AV graft procedure, the vascular surgeon connects one end of a small synthetic tubular piece of Teflon material to one of the patient’s veins, and the other end to one of the arteries. The tube is placed under the skin and punctured as the patient undergoes dialysis. The AV graft has a life span of two to three years and has a slightly higher risk of infection. This is why patients are advised in great detail as to the daily care and observation required in an AV graft. Any signs of infection or changes in the limb need to be referred to a physician right away.

Once vascular access is established, patients can begin their treatment. However, Vein Health Clinics advises dialysis patients to get their access surgery scheduled in advance to ensure complete healing in the access site and reduce the risk of infection. In some cases, the access vein also needs around three to four months to mature and develop before it can be ready for dialysis treatment.

In dire cases, such as those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), Vein Health Clinics can initiate placement of temporary and permanent catheters in the neck or groin area.
