Iraq says goodbye to its beloved archaeologist al-Gailani

Jan 21, 2019

BAGHDAD — Iraq on Monday mourned the loss of Lamia al-Gailani, a beloved archaeologist who helped rebuild the Baghdad museum after it was looted following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion to oust Saddam Hussein. Al-Gailani, who died in Amman, Jordan, on Friday at the age of 80, was one of Iraq's first women to excavate the country's archaeological heritage. Relatives, colleagues, and cultural officials on Monday gathered at Baghdad's National Museum, the country's leading museum, to pay their respects before moving her remains to the Qadiriyyah mosque for prayers and later interment. A devotee of her country's heritage, al-Gailani lent her...

Saudi women runaways rebel against system of male control

Jan 21, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Another Saudi woman has turned to social media for protection from her father, just days after Canada granted refuge to Rahaf al-Qunun, the 18-year-old Saudi who fled her family. Identified only as Nojoud al-Mandeel on Twitter, her case differs from that of al-Qunun. She has not fled the kingdom, has not revealed her face and has only made her pleas for help on Twitter in Arabic. While their circumstances are different, the claims of abuse by the two women mirror those of other female Saudi runaways who have used social media to publicize their escapes....

Archaeologists find Rome-era tombs in Egypt's Western Desert

Jan 21, 2019

CAIRO — Egypt says archaeologists have uncovered two ancient tombs dating back to the Roman period in the country's Western Desert. The Antiquities Ministry says Tuesday the excavations took place in the Beir Al-Shaghala archaeological site in the Dakhla Oasis. Mostafa Waziri, secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, says the tombs were built in mud-brick with different architectural styles. He says archaeologists uncovered ancient human remains and pottery fragments inside the tombs. They also found colorful funeral paintings on the walls of both tombs. In recent years, Egypt has heavily promoted new archaeological finds to international media and...

Egypt repatriates smuggled ancient artifact from UK

Jan 21, 2019

CAIRO — Egypt's Antiquities Ministry says it has repatriated an illegally smuggled artifact from the United Kingdom. Tuesday's statement says the newly recovered relief with cartouche of King Amenhotep I from the 18th dynasty had been on display at a London auction house. It says the relief was originally exhibited at the open museum of the ancient temple of Karnak in the city of Luxor. It didn't say how the artifact was smuggled out of the country. The statement says the Egyptian Embassy in London received the artifact in September. Egypt has drastically stepped up efforts in recent years to...

Q&A: The hurdles and obstacles Saudi women runaways face

Jan 21, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun is the latest young Saudi woman to attempt to flee her family and seek asylum abroad. Her calls for help on Twitter have grabbed international attention and prompted Thai authorities to say they will not deport her back to her family. With Saudi women runaways increasingly using social media to amplify their desperate pleas for help, here's a look at the obstacles they face: WHY ARE SOME SAUDI WOMEN FLEEING? Alqunun has told rights groups and media she's fleeing an abusive family and seeking greater freedoms abroad. Saudi females who flee their...
