And along with photos and illustrations from the band’s personal archives, many previously unseen, legendary photo collector and exhibition curator, Raj Prem, has provided a number of extraordinary prints for this definitive book.

Prem's collection is a mythical one in rock photography circles. Featuring snaps of the Stones, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan among others, his passion has resulted in his tracking down the rarest and most captivating photos he could find. In order to make sure the best images are accessible to fans, he also collaborates with photographers – representing them, managing their archives and organizing exhibitions. A true pioneer, Prem and long time collaborators San Francisco Art Exchange (SFAe) launched the world’s first rock photography show in 1997, highlighting his belief that these photos are indeed fine art. He has worked with many photography greats, including Gered Mankowitz, Robert Freeman, Michael Joseph, Iain Macmillan, Michael Cooper, Peter Webb, Jerry Schatzberg, Dominique Tarlê, Terry O’Neill, and Pattie Boyd. The former music journalist holds a special place in his heart for the Rolling Stones, however. Photographs such as the ones of the Stones’ 1965 US tour shown at that very first exhibition and those from “The Decca Years”, an exhibition which depicted the Rolling Stones rise from chart attractions to leaders of the counter culture movement, have wowed audiences and were procured largely due to Prem’s dedication. Take a read of Keith Richards’ best-selling autobiography Life, and you will notice that many of the photos are credited to ‘the Raj Prem collection’.

It is of little surprise, then, that when the band and the publishers of this definitive volume were collecting what needed to be the ultimate in Rolling Stones prints, they quickly contacted Prem. Containing over 500 pages of images from some of the time’s most iconic photographers, The Rolling Stones will consist of a limited collector’s edition run of 1,500 units - each one numbered and signed by the band. Further, six art editions will feature runs of only 75 each and come with a photographic print. The fact that number of photos from Prem’s collection, taken by Philip Townsend and Peter Webb, have been included in this book, which seeks to tell the tale of the Stone’s storied history, is something that truly means the world to the collector and fits perfectly with his ethos. As he has been quoted saying: “It’s the back stories I find really interesting.”

Raj Prem is an internationally renowned collector and curator of rock and roll photographs. He also represents the photographers and organizes exhibitions allowing their work to be seen. He often collaborates with Theron Kabrich and Jim Hartley at the SFAe gallery, arguably the most successful outlet for celebrity photography (www.sfae.com), as well as with Kate Boenigk at the Proud Galleries in London, which currently display some extremely rare Abbey Road prints.
