Mar 19, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Under a large circus-style tent, Dior showcased its latest haute couture collection to a crowd of Mideast-based fashionistas, social media figures, celebrities, buyers, designers and editors on Monday. It was the first show in Dubai for the French fashion house, which initially presented the Spring-Summer 2019 haute couture collection in Paris in January. Dubai's exuberant displays of luxury and the city's surreal, futuristic-looking skyline were the ideal backdrop to the show, which included 15 new creations. Creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri was on hand at the show, which took place in a park. The wealthy...

Detained Saudi women's rights activists brought to court

Mar 19, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Women's rights activists in Saudi Arabia appeared in a closed-door court hearing Wednesday on unknown charges after being detained in a crackdown last year, making their first appearance before a judge in a case that has sparked international outrage. The arrests came just before Saudi Arabia began allowing women to drive, something women's rights activists had been demanding for years. The arrests showed that King Salman and his 33-year-old son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, are willing to crack down on any opposition even while courting the West. It also was sandwiched between the mass...

Across Baghdad, a moment of respite and guarded hope

Mar 19, 2019

BAGHDAD — Baghdad's main commercial district has seen more bombings than its residents can count. Death visited almost daily during times of war — most horrifically, a 2015 suicide bombing that ripped through two shopping malls, killing over 300 people. But over the past year or so, the residents of Karrada have felt more normal than they have in decades. Streets lined with food stalls are crowded with shoppers, coffee shops and restaurants are packed until late, and the grey cement blast walls that protected against bombings are being removed. "I used to go to school and come back home,...

Mar 19, 2019

CAIRO — An Egyptian actor known for his criticism of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's government said Thursday a military court has sentenced him in absentia to eight years in prison in two separate cases, the latest in a wide-ranging crackdown on dissent and the media in Egypt in recent years. Amr Waked, a 45-year-old actor living in Spain, said his lawyer told him he was convicted of "disseminating false news and insulting state institutions." The lawyer, Malek Adly, said his client got a three-year sentence in once case and five-year term in the other case. He said he has asked authorities...

Dubai developer Nakheel posts lower 2018 profits of $1.2B

Mar 19, 2019

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Property developer Nakheel, behind eye-popping projects like Dubai's palm-shaped islands, said Wednesday that profits reached $1.2 billion in 2018, down from $1.5 billion recorded in 2017. The state-owned company did not disclose revenue figures. There are concerns of oversupply in Dubai's real estate market with thousands of new units, sprawling neighborhoods and more malls being built in the lead-up to the 2020 World Expo. Nakheel's current projects in Dubai include a new mall and tower on the Palm Jumeirah, hotels, resorts and a 1,500-villa community. The company said 3 million square feet (279,000 square meters)...
